Approach 4: Making a Learning Story

A Learning Story is a tool to help teachers with structured planning of a 3D building project. It’s a narrative description (= story) written by the teacher about the activity to be carried out by the learners that is yet to happen; thus creating the context in which the learners act. It includes five constants and seven stages.

The 5 constants:
1. The students will be the ones building (not the teacher)
2. Plan before building
3. Balance between constraints and degrees of freedom
4. Working in a team (3-5 students)
5. Establishing time limits

The 7 stages:
1. Initial lesson
2. Definition
3. Ideation
4. Planning
5. Implementation
6. Evaluation
7. Feedback

The approach was also presented in the Excalibur Education Evening E. You can view the recording here.

Below you can see two examples of a Learning Story.
Note that they are partially based on real Excalibur project cases, and the pictures are taken from these cases.
