Different classes collaborated with learners in other schools and countries on one or more of the aspects\/sub-themes of creating sustainable living environments. The projects were supported by experts from different school subjects, both languages and STEM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> game-based learning approach <\/strong>includes using a real computer game as a (digital) learning environment.\u200b Essential preparation for the building work included critical reading and information retrieval work and additionally working groups&#8217; internal (intercultural) negotiations. In this approach the 3D world is completely empty when the learners begin the project (a so-called flat world).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key points for choosing a <strong>3D-Sandbox World <\/strong><strong>(Minecraft and <\/strong><strong>Luanti<\/strong><strong>) <\/strong>as the main platform for the training of&nbsp;the intercultural international online collaboration were its possibilities&nbsp;for&nbsp;<strong>action-based learning, learner <\/strong><strong>centeredness and for an almost free creativeness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Plain World Setting Approach<\/strong> was developed by the project initiator Laura Pihkala-Posti. During the Excalibur Project, the Plain World setting approach has been used in various international sub-projects. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.excalibur-project.eu\/project-cases\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"366\"><strong>View the cases and their materials here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-2627_c1be84-77\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Die so genannten <strong>\u201e<em>Plain World ( <em>\u201e<\/em>Flachlandwelt\u201c)<\/em> <em>Setting<\/em><\/strong>\u201c-Projekte waren die ersten, die im Rahmen dieser spielbasierten Projektarbeit durchgef\u00fchrt wurden. Verschiedene Klassen arbeiteten mit Lernenden in anderen Schulen und L\u00e4ndern an einem oder mehreren Aspekten\/Unterthemen, um nachhaltige Lebensumgebungen zusammen zu erbauen. Die Projekte wurden von Experten und Expertinnen aus verschiedenen Schulf\u00e4chern, sowohl Sprachen als auch MINT, unterst\u00fctzt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Der<\/strong> <strong>spielbasierte Lernansatz<\/strong> beinhaltet die Verwendung eines realen Computerspiels als (digitale) Lernumgebung. Die wesentliche Vorbereitung f\u00fcr die Bauarbeiten umfasste das kritische Lesen und der Informationsabruf sowie zus\u00e4tzlich die internen (interkulturellen) Besprechungen der Arbeitsgruppen. In diesem Ansatz gibt es noch nichts Fertiges in der 3D-Welt, wenn die Lernenden mit dem Projekt anfangen (sog. Flachlandwelt).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Die wichtigsten Punkte f\u00fcr die Wahl einer <strong>3D-Sandbox-Welt (Minecraft und Luanti)<\/strong> als Hauptplattform f\u00fcr das Training der interkulturellen internationalen Online-Zusammenarbeit waren <strong>die M\u00f6glichkeiten des handlungsorientierten Lernens, der Lernerzentrierung und der nahezu freien Kreativit\u00e4t.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Der Plain World Setting-Ansatz<\/strong> wurde von der Projektinitiatorin Laura Pihkala-Posti entwickelt. Can&nbsp;we find something from schoolbooks in different subjects?&nbsp;What other sources do&nbsp;we use? The&nbsp;students will then discuss the sources and information they found. The sources can be in different languages, in which case the&nbsp;students&nbsp;need to explain and possibly translate the content to others: which requires&nbsp;communication in different languages. \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then the students build, based on the discussions, critical reading and negotiations and&nbsp;mutual decision making, the objects in the 3D world.&nbsp; \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, they will describe what they have done and present their work.&nbsp;Additionally, they will report what they have learned about intercultural communication and the sustainability theme.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Themes that were given at the first stage of <\/strong><strong>Excalibur project were<\/strong>:\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sustainable buildings and their surroundings \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable energy solutions \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable traffic solutions \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable food solutions \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable recycling solutions including the circular economy\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable nature surroundings and supporting the biodiversity of the environment&nbsp; \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable free time possibilities \u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable schools \u200b<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>=> Besides that, the students suggested from the very beginning also their own ideas\/themes, such as sustainable hospitals, sustainable tourism \u2013 and due to the actual world conflict situation even sustainable defence systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-2627_5675a8-34\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><hr class=\"kt-divider\"\/><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong>Die Hauptschritte f\u00fcr den grundlegenden \u201ePlain World Setting\u201c-Ansatz des Projekts<\/strong>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Die Lernenden diskutieren das vorgegebene (oder selbst gew\u00e4hlte) Thema gemeinsam in ihren kleineren Teams und tauschen sich dar\u00fcber aus, was sie im Vorfeld \u00fcber das Thema wissen.\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">Gemeinsame Suche nach neuen Informationen mit einer Diskussion: Wo suchen wir nach Informationen? K\u00f6nnen wir etwas aus Schulb\u00fcchern in verschiedenen F\u00e4chern finden? Welche anderen Quellen nutzen wir? Die Lernenden diskutieren dann \u00fcber die Quellen und Informationen, die sie gefunden haben. Die Quellen k\u00f6nnen in verschiedenen Sprachen sein. In diesem Fall m\u00fcssen die Lernenden den Inhalt erkl\u00e4ren und eventuell \u00fcbersetzen, was eine Kommunikation in verschiedenen Sprachen erfordert.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anschlie\u00dfend bauen die Lernenden auf der Grundlage von Diskussionen, kritischem Lesen, Besprechungen und gemeinsamer Entscheidungsfindung die Objekte in der 3D-Welt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schlie\u00dflich werden sie beschreiben, was sie getan haben und ihre Arbeit pr\u00e4sentieren.
